History

The Association for the Development of Medical Education (TEGED) was established in İzmir in 1999 with the aim of advancing medical education in Turkey. Its primary objectives include fostering the sharing of knowledge, skills, and activities among medical schools and health-related institutions, disseminating advancements in education, and promoting communication and collaboration with professional organizations and national and international educational bodies.

TEGED’s provisional executive board convened for the first time on January 19, 2000. The founding members of the association were (titles as of that time): Prof. Dr. Emin Alıcı, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Akçiçek, Prof. Dr. Gazanfer Aksakoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ziya Alkan, Prof. Dr. Namık Demir, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Dicle, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selda Erensoy, Prof. Dr. Biltan Ersöz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adil Esen, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sedef Gidener, Prof. Dr. Gül Güner, Prof. Dr. Gülşen Kandiloğlu, Prof. Dr. Sezen Koşay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Berna Musal, Prof. Dr. Gönül Peker, Prof. Dr. Hasan Özkan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Sayıner, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eser Sözmen, Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin. Prof. Dr. Emin Alıcı served as the first president, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Akçiçek served as the vice president.

TEGED’s first scientific event, the 2nd National Medical Education Congress, was held in İzmir from April 24–28, 2001.

From May 29 to June 1, 2002, a Curriculum Development Symposium was organized in İzmir.

On November 25, 2002, a general assembly meeting was held, and new members for the executive and supervisory boards were elected. Prof. Dr. Gülşen Kandiloğlu was appointed as the second-term president, with Prof. Dr. Oğuz Dicle serving as vice president.

The 3rd National Medical Education Congress was hosted by Harran University Faculty of Medicine in Şanlıurfa from April 12–16, 2004.

A general assembly was held on December 21, 2004, resulting in the election of new executive and supervisory board members. Prof. Dr. Berna Musal became the president for the third term, with Prof. Dr. Gülşen Kandiloğlu serving as vice president.

In March 2005, the association launched its first official website.

From May 26–28, 2005, a Program Evaluation Symposium was held at Ege University in İzmir.

In November 2005, the publishing rights of the journal Medical Education World were transferred to TEGED from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, starting with issue 21.

The 4th National Medical Education Congress was hosted by Çukurova University in Adana from May 2–5, 2006.

At the ordinary general assembly held on November 20, 2006, Prof. Dr. Berna Musal was re-elected as president for the fourth term, with Prof. Dr. Sabri Kemahlı as vice president.

From May 4–5, 2007, a Postgraduate Medical Education Symposium was organized by Ankara University Faculty of Medicine.

On April 10, 2008, Prof. Dr. Emin Alıcı was unanimously granted honorary presidency.

The 5th National Medical Education Congress took place at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in İzmir from May 6–9, 2008.

At the fifth-term executive board meeting following the general assembly on November 28, 2008, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Dicle was appointed president, with Prof. Dr. Figen Doran as vice president.

From June 4–5, 2009, a Symposium on Accreditation and Program Evaluation in Medical Education was hosted by Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine in Denizli.

The 6th National Medical Education Congress was held at Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Medicine in Aydın from June 2–5, 2010.

TEGED’s 2010 general assembly took place on November 29, 2010. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Erpek was elected president for the sixth term, and Prof. Dr. Berna Musal was appointed vice president. During this assembly, amendments to the association’s bylaws were approved, allowing general assemblies to be held during congresses and symposiums.

From May 5–7, 2011, a Community-Based Medical Education and Educational Research Symposium was organized at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine.

The 7th National Medical Education Congress was hosted by Başkent University Faculty of Medicine from May 2–5, 2012. Following the 2012 general assembly, Prof. Dr. Hakan Abacıoğlu was elected president for the seventh term, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erol Gürpınar as vice president.

From May 2–3, 2013, a Postgraduate Medical Education Symposium was held at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine.

The 8th National Medical Education Congress was hosted by Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine from May 7–9, 2014. Following the 2014 general assembly, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Levent Altıntaş became president for the eighth term, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Şenol as vice president.
